πͺ Woodwind family
Oboe
π How it makes sound
A double reed (two thin pieces of cane) vibrates when you blow between them.
πΌ Range and clef
From Bβ below middle C up about two and a half octaves. Reads treble clef.
π¨ Its timbre colour
Clear, reedy and a little nasal, like a duck that went to music school.
Timbre is the "colour" of a sound, the idea from Lesson 0. A violin and a flute can play the same note, but you can still tell them apart!
π§ Listen to
Prokofiev: the duck in "Peter and the Wolf"
π‘ Fun fact
The whole orchestra tunes to the oboe's A before a concert.
